Surfing Australia

Sun & Thunder Down Under

The big island down under has PLENTY of siiiick breaks on offer. From sand bank, to rock reef, to coral reef, to man-made reef... it's all there for the taking. They don't call Surfer's Paradise a surfer's paradise for nothing. Hosting some world reknowned breaks, Australia is high on the map of surf destinations for many people in the surfing community around the globe. Not to mention the fact that, Australia, considering its "not-so-large-a-population-on-a-global-scale" has produced some of the world's top professional surfers over the decades. The city beaches in built up areas can get pretty packed on a day to day basis, and if it's really on, well, you best be ascertive and know the break or get out and watch as nobody likes to waste a good wave.

There are just sooo many surf breaks to mention that we could build a massive dictionary on the many surf breaks and their windows of happiness. We'll start with the more known surfing breaks and work our way around the traps.

Be sure to suss out the links below and check out the filth surfing footage of the 2006 cylone swell at Tama, (Tamarama), a city beach in Sydney, Australia. The boys are towing into maxing walls at a break where the rips on a small day will take you around the headland into the next bay. No jetski, no way. This is non-paddle material. You would be bloody lucky to paddle into, and jag the drop on one wave, to every ten waves a tow-in crew will pull off in the same window of time.
Cold surf to warm surf. Sharky breaks to more sharky breaks and not so sharky breaks. Topless and naked beach babes and fit bodies in all directions.... or no-one to see in any direction for as far one can see.... Australia has it all. If you want to embark on a major surf adventure, I'd suggest fitting out an RV and doing the perimeter of the land of many, many waves. You can also fly around Australia with domestic flight rather cost-effectively too. Sometimes, in fact most times, the cost of petrol, food, stops & accommodation is more than quadruple an airfare to the same destination, albeit, minus the sight-seeing adventure and numerous surf breaks along the way. If you want to hit a surf break during a swell window that is a long way away, then the flight is the way to go. If you want to cruise and take it all in, especially if you're a tourist, then take the long way and watch out for drop bears and roos.
