Surf History

Looking Back Through The Hour Glass, Reflections about Surf History

There have been people surfing for almost 1700 years in Hawaii believe it or not!!!! Captain Cook the infamous British adventure captain and explorer first saw surfing in Hawaii in the 1770 decade. Surf history is rich in it's past.

In the 19th century many Christian missionaries told the Hawaiians that their traditions and cultural ‘sports’were not çool’ however some Hawaiians continued to undertake the lifestyle of making boards from local timber into the mighty, big wave longboards of the Kings and launching them into the massive breaks off Hawaii.

These Hawaiians around the 1st decade of the 20th century ie 1905 began to instigate a revival of surfing which many historians relate to the illegal coup which took over the Hawaiian Kingdom By the end of the decade surfing had reached California and once that happened it naturally started to spread in popularity to other parts of the USA ((LINK HERE TO USA REGIONS especially CALI)

It is generally accepted and respected that the great Dude Duke Kahanamoku, known as the "Ambassador of Aloha," who happened to be an Olympic medalist, a serious ass Hawaiian waterman was the man who really brought surfing to the world. From his historic efforts the art of Surfing moved forwards at an increasingly rapid rate over the next 100 years focusing on 3 of the world’s best surf spots - Hawaii, Australia and California.

The culture of Surfing now continues to evolve as an experience, a way of life, a movement and in some cases a serious ass career that can make some surfers millions of dollars a year!!

With the ever changing evolution of surf broadcasting, surfing innovations, surf accessories, surf adventures, surfboard design and different surf styles the surf culture worldwide is alive and growing daily.
